The Center of Excellence offers resources to help South Carolina's providers with diagnosing and treating substance use disorders. Through our collaborative partnership, the Center of Excellence has access to emerging research, data, and strategies to help clinicians support their patients.
Provider capacity building includes:
Medical providers can call 864-914-1301 for free, confidential, clinician-to-clinician consultation on SUD/OUD evaluation and management. Open 9 am - 5 pm, Monday - Friday
We provide evidence-based guidance for clinicians from consulting clinician experts on a range of topics, including:

- Assessing and treating opioid, alcohol, and other substance use disorders
- Initiating medications for opioid use disorder
- Toxicology testing: When to use it and what it means
- Identifying and managing withdrawal
- Adjusting opioid-based pain regimens to reduce risk of misuse and harm
- Providing harm reduction and overdose prevention strategies
- Discussing useful communication and care strategies to support patients living with - or at risk for - substance use disorders
- Approaching substance use in special populations (pregnancy, kidney/liver disease, HIV and HCV, co-morbid opioid use disorder and pain)
- Connecting patients with counseling and community recovery supports
- Provide treatment for people living with hepatitis C virus
- Prevent HIV with PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis)
Our team includes expert physicians and advanced practice nurses with considerable experience managing substance use disorders. No protected health information is collected during our consultations.
